Arthur Denis Winston was born on July 27th 1908 at Liverpool, England. After completing his studies in Architecture and Town and Country Planning at the Universities of Liverpool, England and Harvard, USA, Professor Winston gained practival experience with Messrs Lanchester and Lodge in London and with Harvey Wiley Corbett in New York City where he was engaged with preliminary drawings of the Rockefeller Centre.
He was awarded a Royal Institute of British Architects' Hunt Bursary and worked as a Senior Lecturer in Architecture at the Universities of Durham and Liverpool and Chief Architect to the Ministry of Health and Local Government in Northern Ireland.
After the bombing and destruction of the Central Area of Southhampton he was appointed Architect and Chief Planning Officer to the Southhampton County Borough where he was engaged in redevelopment and reconstruction. until his appointment to the Chair of Town and Country Planning at the University of Sydney in January 1949.
He died while on an academic assignment for the Faculty of Housing, Building and Planning at the Science University of Malaysia on the 19th May 1980.
