Emeritus Professor Harry Messel was born in Manitoba, Canada and educated at the Royal Military College Canada; Queens University, Ontario; St Andrews University, Scotland; and at the Institute of Advanced Studies, Dublin.
He was Foundation Professor of Physics and Head of Department at the University of Sydney from 1954 to 1987 and the Founder and Director of the Science Foundation for Physics.
He has been the Chancellor of Bond University in Queensland, a Member of the World Conservation Union, and a Commissioner of the Australian Atomic Energy Commission. In the 1950s, he established the International Science Schools, which are named after him.
