Iredale, born in Castle Hill NSW, studied at Sydney Church of England Grammar School, the University of Sydney from which he graduated in 1919, and University of London from which he graduated in 1925. The University of Sydney appointed Iredale to the position of lecturer and demonstrator in the Department of Chemistry in 1927. Iredale retired in 1962. His research was in the field of photochemistry. During World War II, he analysed bauxite for the NSW Government and investigated refrigerated brines for the Australian Government Directorate of Supply. Diaries received by the University according to the terms of Iredale's last will and testament. Refer to correspondence of former archivist G Fisher dated May 1972 (now in SU Archives G3/211 file 10/299).
