Women in World War I

This collection contains the biographical files of 20 women who served in WWI. The women either signed up for active service while they were in Europe when war broke out or made their own way to Europe. Throughout the war, the women in this collection served as doctors, pathologists, masseuses, nurses, orderlies, administrators, motor drivers, and in the Lands Service Corps. The Australian Imperial Force (AIF) did not allow female doctors to serve, and so Australian female doctors joined Allied medical units.
 
The letters, photographs, postcards and war service biographical forms included in this collection were used by the Honorary Archivists to compile individual entries for the University’s ‘Book of Remembrance’.
