The Sydney Conservatorium of Music was established in 1915 as NSW State Conservatorium of Music aiming to provide a place for students to study and train under the best teachers available and to provide opportunities for citizens to hear the best music. The inaugural concert to officially open the Conservatorium was held on 6 May 1915; the first students started in 1916. A student orchestra was formed, as well as the Conservatorium Orchestra. The latter included staff, students, and external professional musicians.
The programs include those of performances presented by the Conservatorium orchestras and various other Conservatorium music groups as well as their Diploma Concerts. Programs for performances held at the Conservatorium by others are also included. The program format varies from one page flyer to booklet form, containing information on music played, date, place, time of the performance as well as names of musicians and the instruments they played. More comprehensive programs often contain advertising.
