Field Notebooks and Diaries [Herbert Ian Priestley (HIP) Hogbin] (Series 1817)

This series of notebooks and diaries includes Hogbin's observations, sketches etc about the people and places he visited from 1927 to 1974 including Lord Howe Island; Luangiua (Ongtong Java); Pelau (Micronesia); Wogeo (PNG); Malau'u or Malaita (in the Solomon Islands); Guadalcanal and Florida.

Many of the notebooks are numbered and most are identified by location and date. It has been noted on one of the boxes that the early notebooks are missing. The diary entries are dated whilst the entries in the field notes books are not. Notebooks include indexes to the field notes, genealogies, song book and question books.

Hogbin's research in Ongtong Java, 1927; Melanesia including Malaita, Guadalcanal and Wodeo, 1933-1934 was undertaken under the auspices of the Australian National Research Council. He published many articles on his research.
