Papers Relating to the Development of Asian History (Series 1789)

Marjorie Jacobs's (MGJ) early research work had been in Pacific History with focus in German New Guinea. In the mid-50s she found that work in that field became delayed due to the inaccessibility of the German archives in East Germany and further a change in personal circumstances. MGJ concentrated on Indian history and acquired the knowledge of the sources and historical writings which became the basis of her teaching. She had an interest in British traditions of imperial history and was exposed to the postwar decolonisation debates and debates on the transfer of power in India while she was at LSE in London in 1947.

The records in this series focus on Marjorie Jacobs's work in developing courses in Modern Asian History; she was instrumental in developing the first full course in Indian history in Australia.
