Papers, Notes and Field Notebook on the Treatment of Aboriginal People in the Northern Territory

These papers were originally housed in a folder labelled "Aboriginal – White – History and Policy; Government and mission policy post-war, Northern Territory; Post-war, North Australia – especially the Northern Territory and Kimberley". They consist of typescript papers and handwritten notes, mostly undated.

Typescripts: 'Wards, not Aborigines in the Northern Territory - The proposed ordinance "To Provide for the Care and Assistance of Certain Persons"' comments by AP Elkin (8 pp); 'The Talk on Natives - Natives Past and Present' (9 pp); 'Condition and Future of the the Northern Territory Aborigines' notes by G Healy, Oct 1943 (4 pp); 'Aboriginals' 3 pp. 'submission' on a scheme to implement the Commonwealth Government's policy in connection with the welfare of Aboriginal people; a 7 pp. “Report by E.W.P. Chinnery, Director of Native Affairs, Northern Territory" for the Press (c. 1940?)

Printed material: extracts from "The Aboriginals Regulations of 1945", Queensland; news cuttings about treatment of the Northern Territory Indigenous people and a pamphlet of opposition against the "Welfare Bill".  

Handwritten notes: field notes on AP Elkin's visit to several islands in the early 1940s [see further Series 726] namely Goulburn Island, Melville Island, Bathurst Island, Bowden Island (Queensland), Millingimbi, Croker Island [extensive notes], and Hermannsburg Mission at Finke River; notes on a visit to Oenpilli, the Northern Territory; and notes on various aspects concerning the welfare of Aboriginal people such as: Aim of Missions & other settlements, Development of Industries of Aboriginal people, Training, Health, Wages, referring to special Missions and Reserves, Postwar developments, Foods, and multiracial Aboriginal people.
