The records consist of weekly activity reports and monthly summary reports by Leo Austen, Aborigines Welfare Board Welfare Officer for Casino, New South Wales. The original folder containing the material was labelled 'L. Austen – diaries of work as AWO, Casino'.

The diaries date from 1944 to 1946, and cover station, reserve and school visits such as Tuncester [aka Cubawee], Baryulgil, Tabulam, Ulgandahi and Yulgilbar, as well as the meetings with Aboriginal people [“case work”] around the Casino, Coffs Harbour, Grafton and Lismore areas.

Note: These records are copies, the originals are held by New South Wales State Archives. The weekly diaries contain references to individual people that may be sensitive.

Included is some personal correspondence between AP Elkin and Austen which includes a photo of a carved boab seed, labelled “NW Aust” and a negative, unlabelled, showing a trades training room. Also included is a typescript paper by Austen entitled 'The Welfare of the Aborigine'.
