Aboriginal Art in North Queensland and Art and Craft in New Guinea by Maurice Leask

The material in this folder consists of 10 bundles with typescript manuscripts written by Maurice F Leask. Bundles 1-5 relate to Aboriginal art in North Queensland and bundles 6-10 relate to indigenous art in New Guinea. Some of the folders contain photographs and /or sketches. Also included is an AMPOL road map of NSW; there are no annotations on the map.

Bundle 1 (9pp): Aboriginal Art at Silver Valley, Herberton, North Queensland (10/1/1946) and 2pp of sketches showing Fig A. Paintings at Main Cliff site, Fig. B....at Tor Site; and a plate with 5 photographs: Plate 1. Paintings at Main Cliff, Secondary Cliff and Tor sites, Silvervalley Herberton. Language Groups: The Dyirbal, Warungu.

Bundle 2 (12pp): Rock-Shelter Paintings of the Ba-Barem Tribe, Watsonville, North Queensland (15/10/1944). Included are one sketch: Fig 1. Rock-Shelter paintings of the Ba:berem Tribe and 6 photographs of Watsonville / Long Gully (for official purposes only) supplied by Military History Section included with these is a letter by Leask to Elkin forwarding the images to be included with the Watsonville manuscript, the letter is dated 4/7/1947. Language Groups: The Warungu, Dyirbal.

Bundle 3 (9pp): Aboriginal Paintings of the Walsh River Tribe, North Queensland, included is a page of sketches Fig 1. to Fig 3; Leask refers to the site in this article as being near Watsonville.

Bundle 4 (8pp): Art Galleries at Mungana, North Queensland (5/1/1946) included are 1 page with sketches Fig A. Rock Paintings and a carving, Mungana, and 1 page with 4 photographs: Rock Paintings at Mungana, NQ. Language Group: Kuku Yalanji. Leask notes that Mungana is near Chillagoe and the Walsh River.

Bundle 5 (8pp): Painted Rock Shelter at Chillagoe, North Queensland (7/1/1946) plus a 1 page sketch Fig A. Paintings and cut grooves at Chillagoe, North Queensland. Language Group: Kuku Yalanji. 

Bundle 6 (9pp): Native 'Sing-Sing', Aitape, Territory of New Guinea, December 1944.

Bundle 7 (30pp):Old Stone Culture, and Other Arts and Crafts of Natives in the Aitape Area, Territory of New Guinea.

Bundle 8 (3pp): Part 2 Glimpses of Present Day Natives, describes an encounter in New Guinea

Bundle 9: New Guinea images relating to: Wom - Photo 1. The water's edge, Wom, Cape Wom, Photo 2. A derelict canoe close to Wom (Potos Maurice Leask) ; illustration with article 'Native Sing-Sing, Aitape - 1. The dancers are grouped a central figure bearing aloft a long pole, 2. Interest is around a painted design ringed with orange bush fruit and festooned with reeds, 3. Wapi No. 1 group, showing the designs in paint on the back, 4. Every dancer carries a small wooden drum, 5. Women hold arms about each other in the outer circles; illustrations with article Part 2 Glimpses of Present Day Natives - 1. Bundle 10: New Guinea sketches: hand-drawn map of the Aitape Area; Plate 1 & 2 painting patterns, Plate 3 & 4 stones including axe heads, the plates relate to Bundle 7, the manuscript on Old Stone Culture....
