Aborigines Welfare Board Reports

Typescript reports and correspondence of the Aborigines Welfare Board regarding the assimilation of Aboriginal people of mixed blood into the general community. The material is arranged in three bundles.

Bundle 1: a 4 page typescript dated 26/6/1940 on the subject 'Mergence of Aborigines having a Preponderance of white Blood into the General Community'. The paper provides a summary of the Board's various managers' comments about families on their stations who could be eligible to be 'merged' with the general community. The managers are from the following stations Bellbrook, Boggabilla, Brewarrina, Brungle, Bulgandramine, Burnt Bridge, Burra Bee Dee, Cowra, Cumeroogunga, Jervis Bay, Kyogle, Menindee, Moonahcullah, Pilliga, Quirindi, Roseby Park, Taree, Ulgundahi Is., Wallaga Lake, Woodenbong, Cootamundra Home, Kinchela Home. The listing includes the number of families / persons who could be merged, and the manager's comment and recommendation.

Bundle 2: typescript report and accompanying correspondence. On 18/10/1940 the Board had resolved that a Sub-Committee be appointed to investigate the circumstances of each family at Cowra recommended for mergence into the white community. The 7 page report of the Sub-Committee was written after a visit to Cowra. There are annotated sheets on four families with detailed personal information providing 'names', 'caste', 'parents' caste', 'age', 'sex', 'endowment and employment', and 'remarks: capabilities and characteristics'. This information has been used for compiling the report. Also included is a page [2 copies] with 'Additional Notes' on each family provided by Elkin.

Bundle 3: two copies of a 5 page typescript paper by Elkin entitled 'Assimilation of Aboriginal Mixed Bloods in the Cowra District'.
