Wheat Variety Registers (Series 1730)

These volumes record the accessions of wheat varieties collected by various University staff members, starting in 1921 with Professor Walter Lawry (WL) Waterhouse’s appointment to the Faculty of Agriculture. The registers were maintained by him and his colleagues and successors within the Faculty until 1983, when funding and industry changes meant that national plant germplasm collections were established and these ‘W’ collections were transferred to the (then) Australian Winter Cereals Collection located in the NSW Department of Agriculture in Tamworth. The volumes became the basis of research and wheat breeding that eventually led to the formation of the Plant Breeding Institute.
