The first edition of The Gazette was published in September 1950. Its purpose was to:
Firstly...keep the great graduate body informed about University happenings.
Secondly we desire to let our staff members and students become as fully informed as possible and to counteract any tendency towards undue segregation in Faculties or Departments.
Thirdly, we wish to let sister Universities know about our activities in this current period of academic stress and strain.
Fourthly, since we are appealing to to the public for support on quite a new scale; it is only fair that the community should learn in detail about University activities and trends, and hear about our positive achievements as well as our difficulties and worries.
The First Letter to Graduates was published in May 1953 by the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor AD Trendall. The letter was published yearly until 1967. From July 1973, a Vice Chancellor's Letter to Graduates was included in The Gazette. (Title changed to The Gazette and Letter to Graduates, with it being published bi annually until 1984 when it was published quarterly.) This was due to the publication of the The University of Sydney News, published since 1969 which informed staff and students of University activities, graduates received less information. (The Gazette and Letter to Graduates, July 1973, p.2.)
From December 1985, it returned to being The Gazette and again returned to being published bi annually from 1994 on wards. The last edition was in November 2005 when it was replaced with the Sydney Alumni Magazine published in Autumn 2006.
