This item contains mostly Elkin's research notes and details, and comparative information on social organisation for a range of different language groups in the Northern Territory.

There are 17 loose folios of Elkin's research notes on kinship and social organisation, including culture group organisation and subsections for a number of different groups in the Northern Territory, and also some brief notes referring to Aboriginal groups in the Broome region of Western Australia. One folio is entitled 'Adjustment of Different Types of Marriage Divisions, Southern Cross region, WA'. There is also a brief note referring to Elkin's field research on the Kunapipi for the Djauan language group. One folio refers to Wanderang genealogical research notes for the 'Wanderang' people, and includes a reference to Elkin's 1946 field trips, and his notebook (NB1). This set of notes includes a lead pencil sketch map of a section of Roper River region. One page is a typescript entitled 'Anthropology Class No 6, Tutor, Dr A. P. Elkin, Marriage Divisions'.
