This item contains Elkin's field notes for both Forrest River Mission and Lyne River, as well as Arnhem Land. It appears to have originally been three separate notebooks (or parts of notebooks) which, at some later time had been tied together into the one. (The original string binding for the notebook is in a separate enclosure). There are notes on songs, genealogy, journal entries and marriage and descent patterns.

The item has been bundled into three, as follows:

Bundle 1 (no page numbers); the first page contains a sketch showing subsection organisation for East Arnhem Land groups. A few pages later there is a fragment of journal entry with the heading 'Wednesday Aug 11 '46'.

Bundle 2 (pages numbered 1 to 144, plus 4 loose folios) is labelled 'A2, 1946' at the beginning.

Bundle 3 (pages numbered 1 to 156 plus 5 loose folios) is marked 'A3, 1946' on the first page. The bundle also contains a diagram of subsections for East Arnhem Land groups.
