Hinton, Peter Donald
Peter Hinton was educated at Manly Boys High and matriculated to the Faculty of Arts at Sydney University in March 1957. He graduated from Sydney University with a BA on 27 April 1960, MA Hon. Class II on 1 June 1966 and a PhD on 5 October 1976.
1961-1963: Research Officer, Australian Institute of Aboriginal Studies, undertaking research at Weipa, North Queensland
1964-1965: Field Officer, Australian Institute of Aboriginal Studies, travelling widely in Cape York Peninsula, reporting on sites of possible archaeological significance, suggesting research possibilities for social anthropologists, and providing advice and liaison for ethnographic film makers, one at Aurukun and on at Lockhart River
1966-1969: Advisor to Tribal Research Centre, Chiang Mai, Thailand, advising Thai counterparts on the development of research programs in the northern hills and help train Thai research officers
1970-2001: Lecturer/ Senior Lecturer, Department of Anthropology, University of Sydney
2001 onward: Independent researcher, writer and consultant
