Journals and Diaries - Report on Forrest River Mission, Kimberley

This item would appear to be rough notes from Elkin's visit to Forrest River Mission in 1946. He had visited some years earlier, during his 1928-29 fieldwork sponsored by the Australian National Research Council (ANRC).

This item is in two parts, both hand-written in lead pencil. These may have been part of the one journal; each part was at one time kept together with a paper clip. 

This longer part (22 pages) begins: 'Journal Tuesday Sep 17 Boarded launch FRM [Forest River Mission] 1pm...' Elkin has written 1946? in pen. Elkin notes details of everyday conditions at the Forrest River Mission, including such topics as water pumping and supply to homes (pp5-7), housing and other Mission buildings (pp8-9), school rooms (p9); eating places and routines (pp12-13); hospital (p16) general (p17) and clothing (p18). The shorter part has written in ink at the top of the first page 'Fastened to my 1946 (Sept) report on FR. [Forrest River] Mission'. This very brief set of notes makes reference to tobacco, 'native' nurses, including individuals' names, and diet and meals.
