Miscellaneous Papers of James HL Scott and Family

Miscellaneous papers including school report, passport, testimonials, certificates, correspondence and newspaper clippings collected by James Houghton Langston Scott and family, with genealogical notes compiled by Marjorie Helen Greacen (nee Molesworth), his great granddaughter, who gave the collection to the University of Sydney Archives. According to Mrs Greacen's notes, Scott was born in England in 1826, was educated at Heidelberg, and came to Australia in 1854. The University of Sydney appointed him Reader in German Language and Literature in July 1855 for one year, but the Senate decided not to continue the position at its meeting in July 1856. Scott married Helen Caroline Marshall (nee Nock) in 1861 and was appointed Police and Stipendiary Magistrate at Tambaroora, Wellington, in 1866, and at Coonamble in 1877. He died suddenly in June 1878, leaving his widow Helen (Nelly), two step-children, Walter and Emily, and two daughters, Zilla and Lillian.
