Background Articles on Establishment and Work of the Association for the Protection of Native Races (APNR)

This item contains typescript articles on the establishment and origins, history and the work of the APNR. These papers are not dated. They all have marks on the top left-hand corner indicating the former presence of a paperclip, suggesting they were attached to other papers, and/or attached together as a single paper.

- Paper titled 'Protection of the Native Races'; it briefly describes the formation of the APNR in 1911. 1 page. Two copies.

- Paper titled 'Report and Statement of the Work of the Association for the Protection of the Native Races of Australasia and Polynesia'. 6 pages. Paper mentions the President, Hon G Earp, CBE, MLC and Hon Secretary, Rev W Morley. Pages are numbered except for the front cover and first page. The paper provides a background history and summary of the work of the APNR, and a report on activities and developments for the years up to the date of this report.

- Paper with no title. 6 pages. Page numbering starts on Page 2. The paper starts 'Th[e] idea of forming a society in Australia for the protection and welfare of its coloured inhabitants and the native races of the South Pacific was conceived in the minds of a small group of men in Sydney who were occupied in the organizing work of Foreign Missions'. A personal account (? by Elkin) of the establishment of the APNR and discussion of its work. 

- Paper titled 'The Aborigines Protector', with editorial changes. 2 pages. The pages are numbered except for the first page. This paper dates around 1940 or 1941. The subject matters include a background to the production of a regular APNR 'magazine' called 'The Aborigines Protector' and the role of the Rev W Morley in establishing that journal; reforms advocated by the APNR, including changes to the administration and legislation for Aboriginal Welfare; and the work of EWP Chinnery in the Northern Territory.

- Paper titled 'The Reverend William Morley'. 4 pages. The page numbering starts on Page 2. The paper has editing mark-ups throughout. It provides a biographical background to Morley (1854 to 1939), who was Hon Secretary of the APNR from 1915 to 1939 and established the organisation's journal 'The Protector' in 1935.
