Institute of Nursing Studies (INS) [Sydney College of Advanced Education (SCAE)]

In December 1983 the NSW Minister for Health announced the decision to transfer basic nurse education from hospital-based courses to colleges of advanced education as from 1 January 1985. Following this, the Institute of Nursing Studies (INS) was established as an institute within the Sydney College of Advanced Education (SCAE) on 13 February 1984 and had its first student intake in 1985.

The SCAE had commenced operations on 1 January 1982 after amalgamation of several professional colleges. Regulations determining the structure of the College provided for the establishment of semi-autonomous institutes which were governed by a single Council. Each institute was administered by a Board responsible to the Council.

The Institute of Nursing was responsible for the development and delivery of basic and post-basic nursing programs. As part of these programs, students undertook practical work in New South Wales’s Teaching Hospitals including Prince Henry, Prince of Wales, Royal Prince Alfred, and Royal Alexandra Hospital for Children.

On 1 January 1990 the Institute of Nursing Studies amalgamated with the University of Sydney under the Higher Education (Amalgamation Act), 1989 and, as Institute of Nursing became a unit of the  Faculty of Medicine.
