In 1947, AP Elkin was invited to become Chairman of the Standards Association of Australia's Road Signs and Traffic Signals Sectional Committee. The familiar pedestrian crossing sign of a pair of trousered legs on a marked crossing was designed by Elkin while he was a Committee member.

This series contains correspondence, meeting minutes, and copies of papers on road safety issues written by Elkin.

Note that the records were sorted by the Department of Anthropology into artificial series based on subject prior to their deposit in the Archives in 1983. See Elkin's biographical entry for further details.
