Pan Indian Ocean Science Association Papers [Adolphus Peter (AP) Elkin] (Series 747)

The Pan Indian Ocean Science Association was formed following the success of the Pacific Science Association on the initiative of Professor AD Ross of the University of Western Australia. It was inaugurated at a meeting in Hobart in 1949 and the first Congress was held at Bangalore in India in 1951, with sponsorship from the Indian Government. AP Elkin served as President from 1954 to 1957(?).

The series contains Congress papers, minutes and papers of Council meetings, correspondence, and copies of some of the papers Elkin delivered.

Note that the records were sorted by the Department of Anthropology into artificial series based on subject prior to their deposit in the Archives in 1983. See Elkin's biographical entry for further details.
