Photographs [Adolphus Peter (AP) Elkin] (Series 739)

This series includes negatives, slides and prints of Australian and Pacific Indigenous peoples, Elkin in the field, Australian Indigenous art, weapons and utensils, and other aspects of Indigenous life. Some of the items in the series are personal photos of Elkin and his family. 

The Australian images are packaged by state and territory and very few have captions or descriptive metadata other than a state/territory and a date. It is unclear at times the provenance of the images. Some of the images have been used in articles by Elkin and by others.

The images are closed for access. Due to their limited metadata it is unclear who to contact for permission.

The Pacific images include those taken by Camilla Wedgwood, Hortense Powdermaker, HIP Hogbin and others. Elkin may have had these images as they could have been taken under the auspices of paid research by the Australian National Council Research (ANRC) - more research is required.

Items 146 and 147 were taken by Radcliffe-Brown during his field work in northwest Western Australia, 1911 and have been transferred to his papers to better reflect their provenance. See Series 790 for his related field work and some additional photographs.

Negatives and prints taken in Milingimbi by a variety of people including TT Webb, Warner and Elkin to name a few have been identified by Dr Gumbula and are listed in Series 868.

Negatives and prints from South Australia and the Kimberley taken by Elkin have been indexed as part of the Indigenous Photograph Project and are itemised within Series 1042.

Note that the records were sorted by the Department of Anthropology into artificial series based on subject prior to their deposit in the Archives in 1983. See biographical note for further details.
