Public Examinations Results Register, Seniors [Registrar] (Series 82)

The Senior Public Examination, first held in 1867, was conducted on the first Monday in November each year. The concept of these examinations, known at first as the 'Middle Class' examinations, after the Oxford and Cambridge examinations, was first discussed by the Senate on 6 March 1867. From 1867 to 1870, only male candidates were examined, but from 1871 all genders were eligible. In 1869, provision was made for candidates to sit for the examination in Bathurst, in 1870 in West Maitland, Goulburn and Tenterfield, and by 1892 there were 72 local examination centres in NSW, and 8 in Queensland. The registers contain the candidate's name, date of birth, place of education, and full results. It should be noted that there are three part volumes in addition to three full volumes. The arrangement is chronological within the volume. There is some duplication and it may well be that some of these originally constituted rough copies only.
